But enough about me
I've been almost completely absent from LJ recently. And that's not likely to change. But there are some folks on here whom I'm not in touch with elsewhere, and I miss y'all and wonder what's up with you.

So let's play a game: I've been trapped in a cave for 3 months. I emerge in remarkably good physical and psychological shape and regale you with tales of eating cave-grubs. Then I ask you "So, what''s been up with *you*?" And you answer...

Both going well, I hope? Did you guys have a roomate previous to this one?

1. Sherwood and I made international news when we went public with the story of how an agent offered to represent our YA novel if we rewrote it so a major character was no longer gay.

2. I started grad school in clinical psychology. Soon I will be invincible a psychotherapist!

1. Yes, lurked on that story. Bananas.

2. Woo hoo!

Still at PW. Doing a lot of freelance editing. Running dance events. The usual.

Oh, and my girlfriend moved in with me and it's AWESOME. Tricky sometimes. But AWESOME.

All in all, sounds like pretty good times.

I don't really count for this post as I keep track of you from afar in the wilds of Facebook. ;) But I couldn't resist the cave game.

Because, don't you know, I've been stuck in a cave of my own. And how do you get out looking so good? I'm white. Like, grub-belly white. And my fingernails have dirt under them. And every time I see a rat I have this uncontrollable urge to pounce on it and sink my teeth into it and...

Um. Maybe that's enough.

I know! I know! Train it to do the waltz while you give your sales spiel for your new game, Rodents and Ramparts.

I wrote. I read. This is my life.

Heh. Perhaps a smidge more detail than this is possible?

I sold a story to Strange Horizons! And next week I will begin a new job, with better pay, better hours and a better boss. I am working on a novel set in 19thC Central Asia, which is tremendous fun.

Life is treating me pretty well, all round. :>
saladinahmed From: saladinahmed Date: November 14th, 2011 05:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yay and yay and yay! Especial congrats on the sale! Has the story come out already?
alankria From: alankria Date: November 14th, 2011 05:47 pm (UTC) (Link)
I only sold it about a week ago, so it's not due out until May 2012. =D

Sold that story with Tobias Buckell to Clarkesworld. That was very cool. Working hard on getting the ConFusion lit track schedule together (AHEM) and writing a ton right now.

Also? Taking the six year old to get his front teeth pulled on Wednesday. Joy.

Saw that story - podcast, too, right? Go!

Poor kiddo. Take good care of him!
daveamongus From: daveamongus Date: November 14th, 2011 06:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yes, story and podcast. Very awesome stuff.

It should be interesting Wednesday. Autistic kid, sedatives, and minor surgery. I'm thinking that those things don't go together very well, but we'll see.

I'm working on the SAFE California Campaign, which will put a measure on the Nov. 2012 ballot to end the death penalty. It's been 25 years since my mother was raped and murdered, and I want to shift the discourse from revenge to healing.

Dave and I drove down to San Diego for WFC, our first vacation in a couple of years. I moderated the panel on Islamic fantasy (as you well know), had a couple of fangirl squee moments, and had a fabulous meeting with my editor, as a result of which...

I am now doing editorial revisions on my original fantasy trilogy, The Seven-Petaled Shield, the one I've been working on for the last 6 years, in addition to which...

I sold a fantasy anthology, The Feathered Edge, to Sky Warrior Books, and am co-editing one of demented fairy tales for Book View Cafe.
saladinahmed From: saladinahmed Date: November 14th, 2011 05:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
Best of luck w/ the trilogy! And bless you for the good work!

What's the theme of the anthology?
deborahjross From: deborahjross Date: November 14th, 2011 10:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
The Feathered Edge: Tales of Magic, Love, and Daring -- casts a wider net than the usual tightly-themed anthology. The stories are elegant and romantic, witty and swashbuckling, and the settings range from newly-discovered America, an Algerian brothel, an alternate medieval Japan, and the borderlands of Faerie and 15th C England, as well as locations within Norse mythology and entirely fantastical realms. Authors include Tanith Lee, Judith Tarr, Madeleine E. Robins, Sherwood Smith, Diana L. Paxson, Dave Smeds, Kari Sperring, Sheila Finch, Sean McMullen, Rosemary Hawley Jarman, Shannon Page & Jay Lake, Samantha Henderson, and Adam Stemple.

Needless to say, I'm very proud of it!

Gold crown?
pantryslut From: pantryslut Date: November 14th, 2011 05:54 pm (UTC) (Link)
The dental version. I had major dental drama over the last month and a half, culminating in a new shiny crown for my back left molar.

Um... let's see. Almost done a book. Sold a story to TOR.COM. Leaving for Rome in 28 days. Which means holiday shopping now.

Also, taking a lot of pics and posting them with/on Instagram. There's a selection on my site.

Writing, editing, translating, teaching.

It's been good.

Other than translating, that all sounds familiar...
